Cistercian Abbey of Silvacane

Abbey Silvacane is the newest of the three Cistercian abbeys in Provence, it is towards 1144 that the monastery was founded in a then sorry and marshy site. It was he who gave his name to the monastery Silva Cana: forest of reeds. Like her two sisters Abbey Thoronet (Var) and the Abbey of Senanque (Gordes

t offers a perfect harmony with the architecture rules advocated by St Benedict and the order Citeau: Simple see austere, rigorous, functional and stripped of all ornaments which can divert the monk of his prayer. The beauty of the Abbey of Silvacane also results from strong volumes, the harmony of forms, perfection of the equipment stones and play of light through rare ouvertures.Ses sculptures are considered the best of the Cistercian order, however they remain sober in the plant register and reduced to the essential.
The state bought the church in 1845 to have it restored. In 1945 the State acquired the entire site to be listed as a historic monument.
It annually hosts several prestigious concerts of the famous International Piano Festival of La Roque d'Anthéron and the Festival International
String quartets of Luberon..
