Located at the border of the departments of the VAr and the Mouths of the Rhone, Vauvenargues extends its vast territory to the foot of the Northern face of the solid mass of the Holy Victoire.
The valley which surrounds the village is of any beauty, it remains intact and accessible. Very beautiful walks are to be made on the paths of great excursion which cross Vauvenargues. However, because of the fire hazards, the accesses of the Holy Victoire are protected in July and August.
outside the village, nested in the greenery, the castle of Vauvenargues seems to supervise the entry of the valley. Flanked of two round towers of the XIV° and surrounded by an enclosure of the XVI°, its animated history goes back to the Counts de Provence.
It is known that in 1257 the castle belonged to the archbishops of Aix, in 1722 Louis XV offered it for good and faithful services rendered during the plague of 1720 to a certain Joseph de Clapiers….and it is into 1958 that the castle became the property of the very famous painter Pablo Picasso who, according to his wishes made his eternal residence of it.
