THUIR :VIRTUAL TOUR COMING SOON

History:

Research of archaeologists attests of a presence of the man with Thuir as of Antiquity

However the name of Thuir does not appear for the first time in documents of X° century. Finding its origin in the languages Latin and Catalan, the name of Thuir took various forms during centuries:TUGURIUM (cants), TUFEREUS (tuff), TUYRE, TOY, TUIR then justifying its original localization and the significant number of potters which opened out in its walls. As of the High Middle Ages, Thuir is drawn up on a small eminence.

Some houses gather around what one calls still today Cellera, constituted of the cemetery, the church and the modest castle of the lord. In front of the increase in population, Jacques II of Majorque authorizes the construction of a new enclosing wall, at the XIII century, in order to protect the inhabitants from this Royal City, in turn with the hands of the Spaniards and the French.

There nowadays remain traces of this flanked wall of about fifteen turns, loopholes and doors of city (Boulevards Leon-Jean Grégory, Violet, Jean Jaures and Marceau)

Thuir since its origin and for a long time, was the only city significant of our department not to be built at the edge of a river. In spite of this characteristic, Thuir, Capital of Aspre, was, as of Middle Ages center economic significant (agriculture, breeding, manufactures of cloths, potteries…) where were exchanged the products of the plain, of High Aspres and even of Southern Catalonia Its inhabitants always knew to benefit from the privileged statute of Royal City, in particular by the use of the Royal Channel which ensured the irrigation of the grounds and, by there, of flourishing market gardenings, fruit-bearing and wine.
