In full heart of the green valley of Bévera, in the south of the National park of Mercantour, very close to the Italian border, Sospel is a quiet village, which triples its population in summer.
Episcopal city as of the 5th century, Sospel was a long time a significant stage on the royal road from Nice in Turin, also known as road mule of salt, where one crossed Bévéra on a toll bridge. Built at the 13th century, this "Vieux bridge" always exists: rebuilt partly after the last war, it is today occupied by the office of tourism.
While arriving at Sospel, let you charm by the medieval atmosphere of the old city, with the frontages often decorated with superb horn-the eye, which decline their camaieux of ochres and brown along the river. You will admire there many Gothic residences, paved streets, places with arcades, a laundrette still in activity and classified old fountains.
Ramparts which girdled the city at the end of the 14th century, there remains a tower in ruin, which belonged to the old castle of the Counts de Provence.
It is necessary to finish its visit in front of the baroque cathedral Saint Michel, on a paved place of rollers to the original, white and gray reasons, recently restored. With the interior, two triptychs of the 16th century.
