"the Venus" port, the most active fishing port of Roussillon. Marina and seaside resort.

See: the pink marble obelisk with the glory of Louis XVI; shouted with fish, the port, of Monday at Friday starting from 16h.. In the full south of France, at the edge of the Mediterranean, with the doors of Spain,

Port-Vendres is an essential stage in Roussillon.

With Port-Vendres, they are especially the many beaches of the vermilion coast: Bathe, plays nautical, pedal boats, veil, canoeing, fishing, diving, fishing under navy, cruising, walk at sea, tennis, night club…

Natural deep water port, Port-Vendres offers a coloured spectacle, typically Mediterranean.

A daily spectacle not to miss: The arrival of the fishing vessels and the unloading of fish for shouted.

With the maritime edge of the Pyrenees, a whim of nature formed the natural port of Port-Vendres, where the Greek navigators who wanted to rejoin Agde with Rosas were accustomed to making halt by heavy weather. The site was already known at the VIII 2nd century before J.C, as the many wrecks found at the entry to the Port and the neighbourhoods testify some. The city owes its name, Portus Vénéris, with the presence of a temple dedicated to Venus, which would have dominated the split. In 1272, in his will, Jacques the Conqueror bequeathed to the Jacques child the Balearic Islands, Montpellier, Cerdagne and Roussillon. In connection with Roussillon, Jacques the Conqueror insisted that his/her son arranges a port with Portus Vénéris. After its death in 1276, the Kingdom of Majorque was made up and conform to the will of his/her father work were concluded by Jacques 1st of Majorque. But at the end of the XV 2nd, all was in ruins.

Port-Vendres makes it possible multiple to you to explore its surroundings. The ballades along the pier or the walks at sea will enable you to discover the rock coast and its splits. The diving under navy and the high-sea fishing on the other hand, will make you discover the sea and its depths, in particular

reserve marinates of Banyuls-Cerbère. Lastly, in low mountain, of the varied excursions and the walks accessible to all, will allow you to discover inter alia the vineyard which shelters one of the formidable jewels of the Roussillonnais inheritance.

To see

The building of the Dome is located in the higher part of the architectural whole of the place of the Obelisk. Intended for the origin for a hotel for

foreigners, it was allotted in 1835 to the army like housing of the military commander of the barracks of the "Horseshoe". Of neo-classic style, the building was built, at the origin, U-shaped: two symmetrical wings led the glance to the central body of the bottom of the court, capped of a roof, a dome which closed the prospect. Destroyed partly by German in 1944, the Dome was restored after the second world war. Today of many cultural events follow one another it all the year.

The tower of Madeloc

The kingdom of Majorque established in Roussillon a rather effective alarm system whose vestiges are always present. On the heights of Port-Vendres, the lathe of

Madeloc was built in 1285, to control the sea and to communicate with the Tower of Massane by light signals. Built out of schist, it culminates with 656 meters.

Mailly fears

Located just at the top of the beach of the Oasis in direction of the headlight of the pier, fears it Mailly belonged to many testimonys of the history

Port-Vendraise. Propriétée of the Navy, it was demolished in 1944. Registered with the inventory of the historic buildings in 1991.
