Monteux is an important town which spreads out widely through the fertile plain which surrounds Carpentras. The heart of the Monteux's former(ancient) very village is tightened inside its ramparts strengthened with the XIV °.
You will enter by the New door or the door of Avignon, the only vestiges of the ramparts, then you will be able to rush into alleys and alleys of the ancient(former) town. The New door is classified ancient memorial, it was of use to the XIV-th century of seat to the members of council of the town who returned justice. The church Our Lady de Nazareth, is of Gothic style, and in summer recently restored and classified ancient memorial.
The tower Clémentine dominates the village with its twenty eight metres in height. This square tower is the donjon of the Monteux's former(ancient) castle built in the XII-th century which was one of the places of residence of the pope Clément V. It is the only construction which resisted to the fire of 1415.
Until XIX-th century Monteux was an essentially agricultural village. Some farmers resisted to the competition to offer on the market, fruits and vegetables of the qualitative country. Tomatoes, melons, strawberries, apples, peaches, leeks and peppers still have some taste here!.
