The collar of Lautaret is located in the department of Hautes-Alpes (05) (in area PACA), at an altitude of 2 058 Mr. C' is the point of passage between Oisans (valley of Romanche) and Briançonnais (valley of Guisane), connected by main road 91 (Grenoble - Borough-in Oisans - Briançon). It is thus one of the points low of the line of Crete separating the Alps from North and the Alps of the South.

Opened all the year, it makes it possible in particular to observe the solid mass of Meije in south-west and that of Galibier in north.

The Garden of Lautaret is classified today at the head of the gardens of French altitude, among the first of the alpine chain. It attracted in 1999, 33.000 visitors of at the end of June at at the beginning of September

The alpine garden of Lautaret proposes to the visitor a "turn of the world of the plants" of Hymalya in the Caucasus, the Rocky Mountains, Japan. Species rare or original, curious as well as the reconstitutions about various natural environments of altitude: marshes, rubbles, meadows… are to be discovered. The medicinal plants are not forgotten. The garden counts even a mini integral reserve.
