Between Avignon and Orange, Châteauneuf-of-Pope is spread out with the foot of the vestiges of his fortress. Dominating the plain of Comtat and its 3 000 hectares of vines, this village is practically entirely devoted to the famous wine "Châteauneuf of the Pope" of the not less famous name of the Coasts of the Rhone.

| In XIVe century, on the initiative of Jean XXII, the Popes chose Chateauneuf to build their residence of summer there, they then decided to plant a vine on the stony grounds which surrounded their property. The production remained a long time confidential, it started to have a fame at the XVIIIe century and truly continued that in 1929, date on which it accepted the title of label of origin Châteauneuf-of-Pope. | Continuously your walk, you will walk in small punctuated sinuous streets of beautiful fountains (of which the fountain of Souspiron of the XIV°), you will be able to discover the old baker's oven and the mill with oil, you will walk to the castle of the Popes built by Jean XXII of 1316 to 1333. Broad stone staircases lead to the fortress, the popes lived this residence until 1377, date of the return of papacy in Rome. Burned during wars of religion then seriously damaged in 1944. It remains today of the fortress only one section of wall of the home, a high tower and a low room. | During this first weekend of August, the village of Châteauneuf lives again at the hours of the Middle Ages. Friday evening, at the night fallen a large medieval banquet is organized with the gleam of the candles under tents raising the pontifical armorial bearings. |
