Boulbon is a charming village posed in the North of the Mouths of the Rhone between Avignon and Tarascon. Blotti in a fold of Montagnette, the territory of Boulbon is divided between its flat rich person dedicated to the cultures and Montagnette paradise of the hikers, mushroom pick-ups and hunters (except July at semi September: road closures in prevention of the fire hazards).
By visiting Boulbon you will discover a typical village of Provence medieval. It has a strong castle which dominates the village and of the fortifications which formerly protected it from the aggressions.
A pretty booklet published by the town hall will agreeably guide your steps and the history will learn to you which hides behind the old stones of the villages.
On the basis of the place of the Town hall, at the entry of the village, you will pass under the strengthened door: the Loriol door with on its left the “Gardette” (the ex house of the guards which controlled the entries and exits). You will find yourselves in the longest street of Boulbon it Grand' street and will cross old houses with beautiful frontages, some with Renaissance windows. You will also pass in front of the large statue of St Christophe (of the XIV°), you will see old doors with carved pediment, of the lanes which open then on charming small squares with flowered windows.
While going along the ramparts since the street of Barri, you will reach the feet of the vestiges of the superb feudal fortress of Boulbon. You will distinguish his keep (XI°) but unfortunately the towers defenses, the machicolations, the residences of the lords, and the terraces did not resist the agitated episodes of the history of the village.
You will discover then the church co. Anne not far from the castle, built in 1626, then the vault St Marcellin, small jewel of the Romanesque art which you will join by the street of the town hall. You will penetrate there by a superb gate in semicircular arch. This vault is not only interesting by its architecture but also by the curious habit of the procession of the bottles of which it is the success each year: it is without question, the most picturesque festival of Boulbon: it takes place the evening of June 1 every year.
Towards 19h, the bells sound with any flight and all the men and boys of the village, (the women and girls are excluded from it…) following Mr. the Priest has a presentiment of itself to join in procession the vault St Marcellin. Each one carries one of its best wine bottles. At the end of the mass, the bottles are emerged and the priest blessed the wine solemnly by singing prayers then all shock their glasses and drink religieusement.
In theory, each one then preciously closes again its bottle, thus enriched by pious prayers it will be used to calm fever, evils of stomach and other diseases until next June… then the procession joined the village in procession, the heart inevitably merrier and lighter
