The place of L ' EUROPE, 2vues 360°, soon the integral virtual visit of Montpelliers

Capital of Languedoc-Roussillon, Montpellier is become again the sovereign city which it was in the past, the capital of an area which knows today the strongest demographic growth of the hexagon.

Located at the edge of the Mediterranean, Montpellier is impressed spirit that y made blow the scientists, doctors and thinkers come from two banks of "pond nostrum" to study, to teach, to exchange their savoirs in the fields of the right, medicine, sciences, philosophy.

Into less than thirty years, Montpellier more changed during the two previous centuries. It passed from the 25th row of the French cities to the 8th rank.

To accompany this growth, Montpellier put on the durable development by integrating the long term, environment, the social progress and economic dynamism in its urban strategy.

October 2004, the Phosphore newspaper classifies Montpellier in the fourth place of the young cities, and in the 1st place in the studies category.

60 000 students and a reputation which is not any more to make, especially in the scientific dies, Montpellier is "the" city dreamed of the studies.

HISTORY OF THE CITY

Created Xe in XIIe century by Jews, Moslems and Christians, it carries in it the values of tolerance and fraternity.

It is into 985 that the name of Montpellier appears for the first time. The powerful Count de Mauguio gives to Guilhem a manse in exchange of his devotion. The city develops on a site privileged, close to the layout to Via Domitia of the Romans in north, of the road of salt in the south, and the cami roumieu, passage of the pilgrims on the way towards Saint-Jacob de Compostelle.

At the 11th century, the texts give a report on a strengthened borough, equipped with a castle and a church. Economic advancement and demographic growth will involve a reorganization of the city. From the very start of the 13th century, the construction of new ramparts joins together Montpellier, borough seigneurial, and Montpelliéret, the episcopal part.

The creation of a currency (the seal of the consuls), of a university of medicine then of a school of right and art reflect the prosperity of then.

Always at the beginning of the 13th century, Montpellier is attached to the crown of Aragon. Thus the dynasty of Guilhem is completed which leaves room to a quasi republican administration with the Charter of the Habits and Libertés. In the middle of the 14th century, the sale of Montpellier to the kingdom of France forecasts one period of decline that the two following centuries will confirm. The period however counts some exceptions, with the installation into 1440 of Jacques C?ur, the banker of the king Charles VII.

At the 16th century, the religious fights between catholics and reformed are dramatic and end only with the intervention of the troops of Louis XIII.

17th and 18th centuries see Montpellier acquiring, thanks to Richelieu and Louis XIV, the statute of capital of Low-Languedoc. Many private mansions are born as well as buildings cultuels (Saint-Denis churches, Penitent White), soldiers and public (theatre, general hospital…).

The development of the vine growing at the 19th century supports the constitution of fortunes and results in an urban metamorphosis, with the construction of the Law courts, the churches Sainte-Anne and Saint-Roch, the station, and the rebuilding of the theatre… Will phylloxéra initially, and the wine overproduction then, bring for a few decades a crushing argument to the expansion of Montpellier

Montpellier has very beautiful museums
That they are devoted to the heritage cultural, artistic, historical, religious or even scientist of the city and its area, their diversity testifies to a particularly rich past and will be able to satisfy all curiosities.
Agropolis Museum, Atger Museum, Museum of pharmacy, Museum of the history of Montpellier, Museum of the infantry, Museum of the mouldings, Museum of the Montpellier old man, Museum Antonin Emperor, Fabre Museum, Fougau Museum, Languedocien Museum
