Lunel is installed in an area which was marshy, it is difficult to date with precision the birth from Lunel. A certainty, in 888 Lunel is set up in baronnie gathering 13 villages. To the threshold of the year 1000, it belongs Bernard d' Anduze, to baron de Sauve who yields it to the family of Gaucelm, lords of Lunel.
Until the end of XIIIème century, the city will experience a durable development. Lunel radiates grace, in particular, with re-elected of its Jewish school and the quality of its clerks and researchers (medicine, astronomy, translation of old texts…).
In 1295, the city counts approximately 4 500 inhabitants. It, then, is attached to the crown of France by Philippe the Beautiful one. A royal court settles there, under the ministry of Guillaume de Nogaret.
Certain religious orders like Templiers, Franciscains, the Capuchins, the Carmelite friars… will play a paramount role in the history and the construction of the city, with which they will lègueront an inheritance exceptionnel.Aujourd' today, the many residences and private mansions of the centre town attest of this rich and prestigious past.
Strong of its history and its traditions camarguaises, proud of its men famous like Louis Medard, Louis Feuillade and Jean Hugo, famous for his products of the soil such as the Muscatel
In the line of the Parisian markets of Baltard, the covered markets built between 1908 and 1910 constitute a beautiful example of typical construction of the combining style 1900 braces metal and bricks, that Lunel is one of the rare cities to have known consever in the state
