Fos on Mer is a commune located at the South of the Mouths of the Rhone, between the Camargue and the Blue Coast. Fos was until in the Sixties a small village living of fishing, of agriculture and its only industry was at that time based on salt. Since, times changed, an immense harbour complex was creates and of course a significant industrial pole developed around, Fos thus became one of the great industrial centers Mediterranean. The small village of origin always exists, it is the Fos-village which is held on a headland which dominates the city and which, with the beaches and the water sports are principal the atraits tourist of Fos.




You will enter in Fos by a splendid alley bordered of pines of Alep centenaire, a such guard of honour. You will arrive then quickly at the foot of Hauture which is the name given to the rock of Fos, where top of its 39 meters you will dominate all the area and the city. On this rock is the castle, Castrum de Fossis, mentioned as of 923, it is one of the oldest castles of low Provence.

Park on the place of the market (too difficult carpark on the rock at the village), you will follow the new approach ramp and will penetrate in this fortress by the Northern Door. You will appercevrez the keep (built en1200) by traversing the covered way, footbridges overhanging the last excavations will show you the bases of the primitive tower of Castrum.



You will not then fail to visit the church St Saver. While going down again on the other pouring with dimensions village, you will discover the other face of Fos, its small houses, its placettes shaded, its fresh fountains, its terraces of coffee where accustomed blaguent while playing charts… in short, a true village provençal.Vous will be able also to stop you with the village-museum (with the tourist bureau) to discover the life of Fos such was at the beginning of the century: automats and figurines put in scene in various tables the traditions and the everyday life of Fos at that time.
